But before you buy books or start practicing your accents, you have to answer a crucial question: Are you taking the Academic or the General Training module?

Getting this wrong means wasting months studying the wrong material. Let’s break down exactly how they differ so you can choose correctly.

The Big Picture

Both exams test the exact same four core language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. In fact, the Listening and Speaking modules are identical regardless of which test you choose.

The divergence happens entirely in the Reading and Writing sections.

1. The Reading Test: Textbooks vs. Timeouts

• Academic: Designed to see if you can handle university-level English. You will read three long, complex passages taken from academic journals, textbooks, and magazines. Expect advanced vocabulary and data analysis.

• General Training: Focuses on survival English in everyday life. The texts are shorter and sourced from company handbooks, advertisements, and newspapers.

2. The Writing Test: Reports vs. Letters

• Academic Writing: Task 1 requires you to analyze a visual (a bar chart, line graph, or map) and write a formal report describing trends. Task 2 is a formal, academic essay.

• General Training Writing: Task 1 asks you to write a casual, semi-formal, or formal letter (e.g., explaining a situation to a landlord or inviting a friend). Task 2 is an essay that is usually slightly more relaxed in topic, though it still requires standard essay formatting.

The Takeaway: If your goal is a university degree or professional medical/engineering registration, you need the Academic version. If you are migrating for work or general residency (like Express Entry to Canada), the General Training path is yours. Double-check with your receiving institution before booking!
