A Compromise for Traditionalists: New 'Writing on Paper' Option Introduced for Digital Exam

Acknowledging that transitioning entirely to digital screens can be stressful for students who prefer handwriting, the IELTS Partnership has launched a hybrid "Writing on Paper" option for its computer-delivered test. Under this new system, candidates will sit at a computer terminal to read the prompts for the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections as usual, but they can choose to complete their actual essay tasks using a physical pen and paper answer sheet. Extensive field trials conducted ahead of the rollout confirmed that score outcomes remain completely stable and comparable between candidates typing on computers and those writing by hand. Furthermore, the One Skill Retake feature will extend to this hybrid layout, provided the retake matches the candidate's original testing format
